1. Remove or modify email addresses that are visible at your company's web site. Studies by the HTUCenter for Democracy & Technology's UTH Anti-Spam study showed the greatest amount of spam was received from addresses posted on a public web site. People who develop spam lists use address-harvesting programs to surf across thousands of web sites, collecting any e-mail addresses that they encounter. Create a spambot resistant mailto link using javascript, visit this link for an online script generator: (http://www.mways.co.uk/prog/hidemail.php) Replacing characters in an e-mail address with human-readable equivalents makes it harder for the automatic scanning of your address e.g. "plee@yahoo.com" was written "plee at yahoo dot com;"
2. Be sure to "opt-out" when offered a choice by online advertisers to use your email address. Carefully read online forms that request your email address, if there is an option of declining to receive email advertising or distribution of your address, exercise that option. The aforementioned study found that, by and large, advertisers will respect your request for privacy.
